EDGI - The Eating Disorders Genetic Initiative
To identify the hundreds of genes that influence a person’s risk of developing an eating disorder, the EDGI study is looking for Australians aged 13 years and over, who currently have, or at any point in their lives experienced anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder.
Media Smart Online is program that reduces the risk of eating disorders. In 18-25 year old women, it reduced eating disorder onset by 66% and increased eating disorder remission by 75% for those with eating disorder symptoms. The new research study I am Media Smart is open to all Australians aged 13-25 years who would like to improve their body image.

ANZAED Eating Disorder Credential helps treatment seekers find the right help at the right time
In June 2022, the Australia & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED), in collaboration with the National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC) launched connect·ed - the home of the new ANZAED Eating Disorder Credential. Supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Health, the Credential helps people with an eating disorder, their families and referrers to identify and connect with Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinicians on its new national searchable directory.
New practice standards for eating disorder health practitioners
Ahead of a credentialing system for health practitioners treating eating disorders, the Australia & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED) has just released clinical practice and training standards for mental health professionals and dietitians. The first of their kind ANZAED eating disorder treatment principles and general clinical practice and training standards were just published in the Journal of Eating Disorders. They provide guidance to clinicians, service providers and professional training programs on the minimum level of knowledge and skills required by health professionals to build competent practice in the eating disorder field.
MBS items fund eating disorder treatment
On 1 November 2019, the federal government launched 64 new MBS item numbers for severe and complex eating disorders, providing much needed funding for treatment of these debilitating mental health conditions. The new Eating Disorder Plan (EDP) allows up to 40 psychological and 20 dietetic services in a 12-month-period for those with anorexia nervosa or those meeting specific criteria with severe bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and other-specified feeding and eating disorder (OSFED).
